“The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see. ” – G. K. ChestertonGoing away from the tourist trailExtending your traveling experience does not necessarily mean traveling to every small town there is. Instead being curious, outgoing and asking people you meet all sorts of questions can give a lot in return. By approaching people yourself you usually get in contact with “ordinary people”, as opposed to the touts that usually approach you with various offerings with the only interest of getting as much of your cash as possible. Close to the beaten trackYou do not always have to stray far to experience extraordinary things. Just walking in a randomly selected direction can lead to surprising encounters of all kinds. Perhaps you are guided by a group of children who wants to learn better English, or perhaps a proud tobacco farmer will teach you the basics of growing crop. Do not be afraid to ask people to explain what they are doing or if you can join them. You would be surprised how open and friendly people are to those requests. Many people will be thrilled to get to show their work or hobby to someone else. Pride and vanity can be strong drivers. You have spent a fortune to get there, so do not be shy!Being close to the beaten track can also mean that you choose something else than the standard tourist excursion. As an example, if you intend to climb Kilimanjaro, there are several different routes to choose from. Instead of joining the caravan following the “Coca-cola route”(so named because everybody uses it), there is a number of other less traveled routes. For instance the Rongai route that comes from the Kenyan side offers great scenery and almost no other tourists. Off the beaten track can also mean traveling in backpacking style to a charter destination. Besides screaming kids and old ladies with blue hair, beware that there may be restrictions though. In Nassau, Bahamas for instance you are not allowed into the country unless you have a hotel reservation. This can be arranged at the airport, but leaves little room for spontaneity. Or to check what the rooms look like. If you are forced to make reservations directly, try to book for one night only. Personal Experience – The Kaohsiung CourtesyKaohsiung, Taiwan in 1996 me and few friends had heard about a factory where they built supertankers. We took a taxi there but were met by a walled area and lots of guards. But instead of being discouraged we talked to one of the guards who called down the manager. When he heard that we were interested in ship building he proudly offered to show the factory and took us on a guided tour of the area in his own car!Personal Experience – The Magadi MiracleIn Kenya 2004 I went deep into Masai land where not many tourists ventured. I hitchhiked with a freight train to a small town called Magadi. I asked some students on the train if they could recommend a good hotel and they stared at me saying: “There are no hotels in Magadi. “But the creeping anxiousness soon left me as one of the guys offered me to stay in his family hut. I spent three days living with the masais and was guided all around the surrounding area. They even sacrificed a goat for my sake (against my will). I still have contact with three of the guys and talk to them on the phone now and then.

European Backpacking and Adventure Travel for Teens
Filed Under : Adventure Travel by madagaox
Jul.17,2010 As the Christmas holidays come to an end and the remnants of family visits are swept under the rug, the children tire of their new toys in an ever hurrying pace and work begins anew, it seems as though the hectic pace of the holidays is put behind us yet again.
If only that were so.
For a teenager, or a family that houses one, the end of Christmas can only mean one thing: next stop summer vacation. As the New Year dawns, all eyes turn to those three long months where parents toil away at work while their teens run amok, gaining valuable life experiences in the arts of ‘hanging out’ and learning to disobey. Well, perhaps summer isn’t all bad, but it can certainly take its toll on a parent worried about the advancement of their child outside of the boundaries of school.
In the past, parents have worked hard towards finding places that their kids can go during the summer where they can learn, experience, and stay out of mom and dad’s hair. From summer camp, sports clubs, camping trips and a week with Grandma, parents have stretched themselves fairly thin for ideas about what to do with a boisterous teen that both takes up months worth of time and provides teens with something they can actually take away from the experience. However, more often than not, teens end up apathetic (or start out that way), and turn the experience from something they could learn from to something they disdain.
Perhaps this year, parents should try a new system. It is time to stop trying to impose learning experiences on your teens and start giving them something they won’t recognize as a life lesson. I mean, of course, travel.
Since as far back as I can remember, the idea of backpacking Europe has been a rite of passage for affluent families in North America. In the past, however, a lack of safety, cheap flights and tour companies forced parents to wait until their teens were already emancipated before they could give them the experience of their lives. Nowadays, however, this has all changed. Companies such as Big Brother Backpacking (www. bigbrotherbackpacking. com) offer tours specifically for youths looking to do something life changing with their summer (or parents who are looking to get a little quiet time). Considered leaders in the art of teen adventure travel, Big Brother Backpacking offers small, five person group tours aimed at teaching teens the art of travel leadership while providing them with the opportunity to see something more than just their home town. As a tour company specifically aimed towards students, Big Brother Backpacking provides a coming of age European travel adventure without the worry that your child will end up spending the entire time (and allowance) in a bar in Amsterdam. Since the company allows the travelers themselves to determine where the trip will go in real-time, students are taught how to plan and execute a trip in a small group, make close friends from a variety of backgrounds, and experience Europe in a hands on way. Instead of being forced into a learning environment they will attempt to ignore, teens are given a firsthand opportunity to see what personal success through determination really means (not to mention getting a bit of much needed exercise away from the computer and a solid geography lesson).
For parents willing to wait until graduation and splurge on a cross country drinking tour, there are also companies aimed towards allowing the youth to run wild for the first time. Bus tours for post grads such as Contiki tours (www. contiki. com) or European Bus Tours (www. europe-bus-tours. com) offer the chance to see a variety of bars and clubs across the continent (and maybe a site or two along the way). (Unlike a backpacking tour, however, these bus tours leave much to be desired in the way of experience, as without photos a lot of the trip’s events are mysteriously forgotten the morning after. ) For parents looking to send their kids on a budgeted sightseeing trip (careful of the hidden fees), bus tours are a good way of knowing where your child is and what they are up to on any given day.
Whichever you choose, remember that this summer can be different. Your child can be satisfied with learning and gaining life experience, can be kept safe, and can truly enjoy themselves doing something productive. Now it is just a matter of letting them go.

Siberia Here I Come! – Adventure Travel Part 1
Filed Under : Adventure Travel by madagaox
Jun.26,2010“You must really hate this job. ” That’s what my boss said when I told him I was moving from San Diego to Siberia for a year. In reality, I was bored and looking for something that would be completely and utterly new. Whether it was sunstroke or a developing tolerance to margaritas, San Diego just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Heck, I hadn’t even gone to the beach in nine months and it was only a few blocks away. Time to rediscover a zest for life.
As you are doing now, I trolled the Internet looking for that rare opportunity that would renew my vigor and let me brag to my domesticated friends. Pick coffee in the South Pacific? No, I already drink too much of it. Sail around the world on a container ship? No, I wasn’t ready for involuntary self-reflection. Before I knew it, I had agreed to move to a city in Siberia known as Chita. Yes, I was going to be a professor at Chita State Technical University through a program put together by Siberian Intercultural Bridges. Donate – they need the money.
So, what does one take for a one-year stay in Siberia? Why, I’ll just go buy a guidebook on Siberia and read the “what to take” section. My search of the local mega bookstore was disappointing. Shockingly, there were no guidebooks for Siberia. I was tempted to write a nasty letter to Lonely Planet and others until the bookstore clerk said, “You’re going WHERE?” When she started giving me the “you must be a criminal on the run” look, it was time to go.
Fortunately, I was able to find experienced travelers that could provide me with the details and items that were absolutely necessary. My girlfriend gave me the all-important electric blanket, a power converter and intimate details about what would happen to me if I should dare share it with another women. Grandpa gave me a World War II down coat that was about three sizes too big and made me look like a walking gopher. Family, friends and random strangers contributed further items and advice that would be critical to my survival.
Apparently rating my chances of survival at 50-50, friends and family put together a going away/never see him again party the day before I left. Of course, everyone brought Vodka as a humorous going away gift. The tide quickly turned, however, as all were asked/forced to try a “taste of Russia. ” Many of the events of that night will remain forever sealed in antiquity, but it should suffice to say that the wife of one friend went into labor which made it a very fun night and subsequent day for him at the hospital. Few got off so easily.
Gigantic backpack, electric blanket, hangover and I headed to the airport the next morning. But that’s a story for part 2 of this nomad adventure travel series…
Travelling feeds the wandering soul, but it also feeds the corporate soul. Even the most top executives no longer travel solely for business purposes anymore. Leisure travel has become a preferred method for stressed-out businesspeople to unwind in their downtime. In today’s modern world, active executives take advantage of their vacation time by treating themselves to some well-deserved leisure travel. With this evolution of travel, the idea of what travel entails has changed as well. People are no longer satisfied to visit the same tourist traps, but instead want to explore their world through adventure travel. In the field of adventure travel, bigger is definitely better.
The concept of adventure travel is not entirely new. For as long as standard tourist spots have existed, there have been travelers that have gone out of their way to avoid them. Those travelers became the first adventure travelers. As the world of adventure travel progressed, more people became interested in traveling the road less taken. More travelers are curious about the world beyond the glossy travel brochures, and adventure travel has risen in popularity to become a world premier method of travel.
To learn how to define adventure travel and how to become an adventure traveler, you have to learn more about extreme sports. Some people, no longer satisfied with the typical sports like football, baseball or soccer, decided to look for excitement in more extreme activities such as base jumping and wakeboarding, thereby creating the field of extreme sports. As more people got involved in extreme sports, they would travel to meet up with one another and adventure travel got associated with their extreme lifestyle. These extreme sports enthusiasts incorporated their love of their sports into their traveling, and created a type of travel full of thrill and adventure.
Adventure travel certainly does afford adventure enthusiasts the opportunity to intertwine their sports with their traveling. This type of travel gives travelers the same burst of adrenaline that extreme sports can offer, and also gives travelers to see the world from a new perspective. Unfortunately, as with anything that relies on its obscurity to stay fresh and exciting, a rise in popularity spells out the beginning of the end for adventure travel. As adventure travel becomes more popular, the destinations that were once off the beaten path have become tourist attractions. This rise in popularity is best illustrated by the travel agencies that specialize in adventure travel packages for those interested in adventure but not interested in planning the trip themselves.
In addition to the standard travel options that cater to conventional tourists, most travel agencies also offer adventure travel packages for anyone who wants more excitement in their vacation. If you’re looking for a vacation that you’ll never forget, filled with stories you’ll retell for years to come, consider booking your own traveling adventure.
