How would you like to stay in Umbria for two weeks and not have to pay a dime for your accommodations? That would sure save you money on your vacation, wouldn’t it? And, let’s say your accommodation was a 4-bedroom, 3-bath stone building which dates back to the 14th century, with a kitchen with all you need to cook fabulous meals? That would save money on dining out, now, wouldn’t it? Of course, with the house costing nothing, who needs to save money by eating in?

Where can you find such incredible savings? It’s called house exchange or house swap. The recent movie “The Holiday” used the notion of a house swap to help the leading characters find romance. One woman from England swaps houses with a woman from the United States over the Christmas holiday and they both find romance in their new surroundings. Will their new romance become permanent and lasting true love? Who knows, but at least we know they saved money. And, you can too.

Here’s how it works. If you decide you want to exchange homes with someone, you sign up with a house exchange company, which can typically cost around $60 to $80 per year, choose which destination you wish to visit and the dates, and see if there are any potential exchange partners who you match with. If they agree to stay in your house during the time specified, you’re on your way to a vacation in Paris, Florence, San Francisco, or wherever there’s a match. And the cost? Just your membership fees to the exchange company. Your only costs, then, are your airfare, dining out and recreation. Considering that lodging can run about $150 a night and even higher, you stand to save hundreds to thousands on your vacation.

House swapping is nothing new, and many of the exchange companies have been in business for decades, with more popping up all the time.

Aside from the savings, you get the opportunity of living like the locals do. You get the opportunity to try restaurants that aren’t near the tourist hotels, see places you otherwise might pass up.

In addition to the benefits you receive in your “new home,” your old home is being looked after by your exchange partners, which means you don’t have to pay anyone to water your plants or check up on your house. And, if your arrangement with your exchange partner allows for it, your pets will be cared for as well.

Some things to consider before posting your request with your chosen company include:

Will you allow for the use of your car? Many times the exchange partners exchange cars as well.

Do you agree to care for the exchange partner’s pets?

How many people do you allow to stay in your house?

Will you allow children?

Will you allow pets?

One question you may have is – is home exchange safe? Obviously there are unscrupulous people out there, so you can increase your safety by making sure you keep your valuables locked up. It’s also a good idea to have your mail held by the post office. Also, you could choose only those homes which have had prior exchanges. If someone’s had 10 successful exchanges you should feel pretty secure. However, if at any time during the process you feel uneasy about the exchange, trust your instincts and stop the process.

House swapping is definitely one option to consider in order to cut down on vacation costs. Who knows, it may open you up to a new way of travel that you’ll return to year after year after year.

In order to have healthy travel, you first need to be sure that you\’re healthy before you leave. Get any recommended immunizations and medications. This list can be long or short depending on how exotic your destination is. The best source for up to the minute information on healthy travel is a travel medicine doctor. These specialists keep up with all of the latest recommendations for anywhere in the world. Also be up to date on all your routine vaccinations, including a seasonal influenza vaccine. It won\’t protect against a new flu strain, but it protects against any seasonal flu that may also be occurring. . . , and not getting a “common” seasonal flu will help keep you stronger, so your body can resist that new strain. Drink bottled water in places where the water is considered unsafe. It never hurts to err on the side of caution. . . if you are unsure, grab that bottle rather than tap water. Eat nutritiously. A bag of chips and a sandwich might be good for your budget, but eaten often, they aren\’t good for your travel health. Try to eat at least one good balanced meal a day with your proteins and veggies. If you have a serious dietary restriction, get it written out by someone who speaks the local language so you can use the note to order in local restaurants. We once traveled to Africa with a friend who was gluten intolerant. . . and she did fine. Chefs everywhere are willing to work with you. Avoid unhealthy looking restaurants. If the food looks suspicious, you should move on to a healthier looking place. If the diners inside are coughing and sneezing, you might want to give the restaurant a pass. Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer to remove germs from your skin. (Purell is one brand we\’ve used. ) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. . . germs are spread more quickly with that kind of contact. Exercise to get in shape before you leave on your trip, and keep exercising on the road. You\’ll probably be doing enough walking so you won\’t have to do any gym time. Just remember, exercise keeps you healthy. Try to get enough sleep. If you\’ve crossed many time zones, you will arrive with jet lag. It will take you a day or two or more to get acclimated to your new time zone. We know you want to spend all the time you can seeing the sights and experiencing that new culture, but if you get over tired, you\’re much more susceptible to catching a cold or the flu. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. . . try to stay at least 6 feet away. Influenza is thought to spread mainly through contact with sick people or through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Monitor the local health situations. . . . Listen to announcements from the local government and follow their guidelines and restrictions if there is some sort of a disease outbreak like the Swine Flu. If you do get sick, get medical care. Pharmacies in Europe can help with common ailments. In most areas you can check with local clinics for more severe problems. Your hotel may be able to call a doctor to make a house call. Consider joining the non-profit IAMAT, The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers. They can get you a list of English speaking doctors in member countries. There is no doubt that airfare is one of the biggest expenses of any vacation. Airfare costs can easily represent at leas half of the total cost of a vacation, and if you do not get the best possible deal on airfare it is easy to go over budget.
There are some important strategies for getting the best deal on airfares, and this article discusses some of our favorites.
One of the things I have learned over the years is that it is almost always less expensive to fly out of the larger airports than the smaller regional ones.
While this is not always the case, and it is not true of every small airport, most larger airports have far more airlines competing for passengers. As we know, more competition generally equals lower prices for passengers.
Many of the larger airports are also home to the low cost carriers that have been such a phenomenon in the industry. While Southwest, Jet Blue and some of the other low cost carriers serve smaller airports, many are left out.
The great thing about the incursion of these low cost carriers is that they drive down the prices of the major airlines as well.
So, even if you don’t like the open seating, peanuts only policy of a low cost carrier like Southwest, chances are you can still score a good deal at an airport they serve, even on one of the old line air carriers.
Of course the problem with flying out of major airports is getting there. Many people are in the same situation I am. That is, they have a small, regional airport nearby, with a couple of major airports a few hours drive away.
What I do every time I need to fly is compare the cost of flying out of my close regional airport to the price I can get if I fly out of a major city. While I have been able to score some excellent deals from my regional airport, in most cases the difference in fare has been at least $200.
I then must weigh the costs of that cheaper ticket against the convenience of local flying. Usually it makes sense to head to the large airport, particularly if I am buying more than one ticket. At a $200 price differential, it is easy to see how much money can be saved for a family traveling together.
One great trick that too few people take advantage of is booking an airport hotel for the night before your flight.
This is especially valuable for those early morning flights and saves you having to get up in the middle of the night and hit the highway. Instead, head down the night before, get a good night’s sleep and take the airport’s shuttle right to the airport door.
The extra added bonus of this approach is that in most cases these airport hotels allow their guests to leave their cars at the hotel for the duration of the vacation.
In many cases this service is free with the hotel stay, and even in cases where there is a few involved it is usually much lower than comparable parking at the airport.
So instead of paying $10, $15 or even $20 a day to park at the airport, you have a safe, well lighted place for your car during the trip, plus a comfortable place to spend the night.
I honestly don’t know why more people don’t take advantage of this great way to save big bucks on both airfare and parking costs.

Cashing in on Indonesia ’s different cultural make up, Warung Enak is a gastronomic celebration of the different traditions and recipes that trademark the archipelago. From 17 000 islands and over 200 ethnic groups, the dishes from Warung Enak are great ways to learn of the evolution Indonesia ’s generations. Warung Enak uses the time-honoured Indonesian warung concept which is basically an open air café. This particular warung maintains the traditional warung environment while utilising many of the modern conveniences and advances that we now enjoy. Designed by Michael White, an Australian tropical landscapist and architect, its blue and white colours are complimented by the mosaic tiles that lay on the floors and the décor just screams casual-but-chic. The open air concept is retained and the high ceiling keeps the interior cool. All these come together to educate you on dining Indonesian-style from years back. Keeping in mind their international make up, all dishes are accompanied by a picture to assist diners in making their orders. The Garang Asam is an excellent choice to start with. This seafood soup is made with lemongrass, chilli and ginger amongst other things and it’s not for the light hearted as it has a spicy after-taste. The Sate Bebek Bumbu and the Sate Babi is a definite must and it is marinated in an assortment of ingredients. The end result is moist and tender meat on a stick. The other recommendation is the award-winning Waku Blanga. This poached travelly is perfectly cooked and comes in a spiced herb broth. What makes this dish a winner is the wonderful way that the lemongrass and chilli compliment the fish. To make your Indonesian crash –course more complete, try either of the two delicious desserts, the Kue Pepe which is a layered tapioca cake, or the Lapis Surabaya, a vanilla and chocolate layered cake topped with pineapple. Presented in colourful but natural manner, the visual invitation is just too hard to resist. Service is impeccable and the staff is attentive and friendly, making the dining experience complete. For more recommendations, approach the staff as they are very well versed with the menu. SD Food Advisors take on Warung EnakIt’s difficult to find a restaurant that stays true to Indonesian cuisine but Warung Enak prides itself in its authenticity. It offers a perfect meal for tourists and locals who crave an all-Indonesian meal. Despite being a ‘warung’, which is basically a local term for a cheap café, the presentation and service is definitely more up market while the décor reflects a typical warung of the days gone by. To make sure you get more out of your dining experience, Warung Enak offers a unique cooking class as well. Diners will get to learn how to prepare your own Indonesian feast to recreate this spectacular feast. Educational and tasty, this is a sure-winner.
